Oil Pastel Basics: Painting Michigan Beachscapes

Hosted by Darcy Library of Beulah

When: Tuesday, July 30, 2026 from 1:00pm-3:00pm

Where: Darcy Library of Beulah

Registration required: this event is limited to 10 people. Sign up below!

July is Libraries Love Lakes month and Lake Appreciation Month in Michigan. The BCD is partnering with local libraries to host a variety of programs and provide curated reading lists for kids and adults. Check back with your local library and the BCD website to see what's happening in July!

About:
Help us celebrate lakes in July and join the Benzie Conservation District’s Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator, Kyla Robinson, for a beginner’s lesson on painting with oil pastels.

We will focus on capturing the beauty of Michigan’s lakeshores. We encourage you to bring your favorite photo of a Michigan beach landscape for inspiration, bonus points if it has interesting clouds or a sunset.

All materials provided, and you’ll leave with your very own oil pastel artwork.

Important notes:
  • This lesson is tailored for adults (older children welcome, highschool up)
  • Attendees are encouraged to come with a reference photo. A good reference photo includes a Michigan beach with a clear horizon line and not too busy (people, etc.). For some extra fun, bring a photo with an interesting skyline, like puffy clouds or a sunset.
