Riparian Greenbelt Demos

Soil erosion and sedimentation is a major threat to Benzie County's waterways.
The soils that wash away from your stream banks and shorelines cover up important habitat and breeding grounds
for fish, aquatic insects, and other organisms. Excess nutrients from failing septic systems and over-fertilization
enter our lakes and streams in runoff from storms. These nutrients then contribute to massive algae and weed growths
in our lakes.
As a riparian landowner, the best way you can help prevent these pollutants from leaving your own property is to
plant a native, vegetative buffer strip along your waterway. Native perennials and wild grasses have root systems
that grow up to ten times deeper than traditional lawn gasses. The deep roots help to pull excess nutrients from
the ground and stabilize shoreline sediments, while the colorful foliage and flowers above ground add beauty to
your waterfront landscape.
While a manicured lawn may be appealing to humans, it isn't to Michigan's wildlife. Do your part to protect our
valuable resources and plant native vegetation along your shoreline.
