Webinar: Managing Eurasian watermilfoil with burlap barrier: response of biological communities and nutrients

Northwest Michigan Watershed Coalition Webinar Series #3
When: Monday, December 15, 2025, 12:00pm - 1:00pm EST

Where: Zoom (virtual only, link available upon registering)

Speaker:
Anna Briem, Grand Valley State University. After graduating from the University of North Alabama with a degree in marine biology, Anna worked in Alaska for six years as a fisheries biologist on commercial fishing vessels. After moving to Michigan, Anna started her graduate work at Grand Valley State University and will graduate with a Master’s in biology this fall.

About:
Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) is one of the most aggressive aquatic invasive species threatening Northwest Michigan’s lakes. Since its discovery in Lake Leelanau, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Lake Leelanau Lake Association have worked together to control EWM utilizing benthic barriers made of biodegradable burlap.

Join us for an informative webinar with Anna Briem, a Master’s student at Grand Valley State University, whose master’s research focused on how these benthic barriers affect the lake’s biological communities and nutrient dynamics, offering insights into the ecological implications of this innovative EWM management approach.
