Bur oak is an adaptable tree that does well on a variety of soils, including compacted sites, making it a great street tree. It has an impressive, rounded crown and is used for windbreaks, riparian forest buffers, and timber. Its acorns are enjoyed by a variety of wildlife.

Assisted Tree Range Expansion Project (ATREP) species like this one currently tend to grow farther south, but climate studies and early plantings by Northern Michigan residents suggest that they will move north in time. By planting this species and monitoring its health, you can directly participate in climate change research! Contact our District Forester for details on how to share your findings.
