Northern white cedar is also called arborvitae, meaning “tree of life.” Its foliage is bright green and fanlike with a clean, aromatic scent when crushed. Due to its preference of moist soils, it thrives in much of Benzie County and can be found in many wetlands. It makes a good yard tree, natural fence, or windbreak. It is browsed by deer and provides cover and nesting for birds. Its rot-resistant wood is used for poles and lumber.
