Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
Light: likes full sun
Soil: many types; can grow well in areas that are dry, poorly drained and wet, or even occasionally flooded, and will tolerate significant soil compaction
Height: can grow 50’ to 60’
Swamp white oak enjoys moist, lowland sites but is also commonly used as a shade tree for large lawns, parks, and naturalized areas. Its wood is used for furniture, cabinets, veneers, interior finishing, and flooring, as well as beams and boards for general construction. The crown shape and bi-colored leaves (dark above, lighter beneath) are attractive features. It provides cover for birds and mammals.
Assisted Tree Range Expansion Project (ATREP) species like this one currently tend to grow farther south, but climate studies and early plantings by Northern Michigan residents suggest that they will move north in time. By planting this species and monitoring its health, you can directly participate in climate change research! Contact our District Forester for details on how to share your findings.
