Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
Light: prefers full to partial sun
Soil: prefers moist to well-drained soils; tolerates dry sites and various soils
Height: up to 80’
Shagbark hickory is famous for its bark, which forms plates that curve away from the tree trunk as it ages. This distinct, “shaggy” texture makes it a unique addition to your woodland. Its foliage is made of several leaflets and it produces edible fruit.
Assisted Tree Range Expansion Project (ATREP) species like this one currently tend to grow farther south, but climate studies and early plantings by Northern Michigan residents suggest that they will move north in time. By planting this species and monitoring its health, you can directly participate in climate change research! Contact our District Forester for details on how to share your findings.
