Beach Clean-Ups

About the Program

Benzie County is home to essential freshwater resources that we share a responsibility to protect. Whether litter is dropped on the beach or washes ashore from miles away, it poses a threat to local wildlife and to water quality alike. Each year in the spring and fall, we invite volunteers to join us in Beach Cleanup events, where we collect, note, and dispose of debris found on local shorelines.

Being within a Great Lakes state, Benzie County is part of a bigger whole, and preserving freshwater resources is a collective responsibility. Our cleanup events involve participation in and inspiration from initiatives that serve this broad vision. Read more about these initiatives below or click through our archives to see past cleanup events.
Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup Program

The Adopt-a-Beach program is a regional volunteer opportunity sponsored by The Alliance for the Great Lakes. Each year, nearly 15,000 volunteers participate in beach clean-ups along the shores of all five great lakes. Results are tracked and the data is entered into an online system that helps to inform regional policy and educate the public.
International Coastal Cleanup Day

The Ocean Conservancy launched International Coastal Cleanup Day over 35 years ago. This annual day of stewardship happens on the third Saturday of September, inspiring volunteer groups and individuals on a global scale. As with Adopt-a-Beach, data from International Coastal Cleanups is logged in cleanup reports.
