Preserving and Enhancing the Natural Resources of Benzie County

Leave a positive impact on a beloved local waterway at the upcoming Betsie River Clean Sweep this June. In partnership with the Boardman River Clean Sweep and the Traverse Area Paddle Club, this 11th annual program invites volunteers from around the region to spend a day on the water with us as stewards of the Betsie River. Why it matters The Betsie is a state-designated natural river that winds for 54 miles through three counties, ending in Lake Michigan by Frankfort and Elberta. Litter in water sources like the Betsie threatens species in every habitat where the river flows. Of significant concern are huge snares of fishing lines and hooks, which pose a problem not only to wildlife but also to people who enjoy the river for outdoor recreation. Put simply, to keep this river healthy and safe, stewardship action is essential. How you can help In 2023, the Clean Sweep aims to remove litter from at least 13 miles of the Betsie River. Volunteer support is needed! Register to join us on June 9th for this year’s Betsie River Clean Sweep. The event will go from 9:00am to 2:00pm, beginning at Homestead Dam for a volunteer appreciation snack breakfast. The Benzie Conservation District will provide cleanup supplies, like grabbers and bags, but asks that participants bring their own:
So we know how many people to expect (and prepare food for!), registration is required. To sign up, please contact us at info@benziecd.org or 231-882-4391. Protecting local water is an ongoing responsibility. Thank you to everyone who has helped with past Clean Sweeps by participating or spreading the word! In addition to the regular monthly meeting, the Benzie Conservation District board will be holding a special meeting on May 11th at 12:00pm in our office, which is located at 280 S. Benzie Blvd, Beulah, MI 49617. As always, the public is welcome to attend.
The board will gather again on May 18th at 4:00pm in the Benzie Conservation District office for their regularly scheduled meeting. |
