Wed, October 25th; 6:30-8:00 pm Grand Traverse Conservation District; Boardman Nature Center; 1450 Cass Rd, Traverse City Have you ever seen a lichen and knew that it was a lichen? Not many people know what lichens are, and who would? They seem as though they are from another planet! Lichens are bizarre organisms and no two are alike. Lichens are a complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga. The dominant partner is the fungus, which gives the lichen the majority of its characteristics. Join Julie Jones Medlin, retired Biology Professor at Northwestern Michigan College will take us for a photographic walk through the world of lichens. Author of A Guide to Michigan Lichens, Julie will speak about the unique way lichens fit into the plant kingdom, how to identify some of the most common lichens in Northwest Michigan and why they are important air quality indicators maybe telling us about changes in our natural environment. FREE event. For more information, contact Benzie, Leelanau & Grand Traverse District Forester, Kama Ross at 231-256-9783 or [email protected]. Comments are closed.
